spacer      Our annual Portfolio Workshop has grown into a full Illustrator's Day, and what a day it will be!
The workshop will be for beginning to professional children's book illustrators who are interested in putting together or improving their portfolio, learning how best to promote themselves to publishers, hear from established illustrators, and participate in assignments which will get your creative juices flowing!
Registration is now open. (You do not have to be a member of SCBWI to participate, although it's cheaper if your are.)
We're thrilled to have an incredible line-up of speakers and mentors this year...

Brian Seidman, Managing Editor of Newsouth Books will share the activities of a small-to-midsize publishing house and how they choose and work with illustrators.

Loraine Joyner, Art Director of Peachtree Publishers will run a story-board activity, where you will work with a manuscript to create a layout (bring paper and pencil). She will also share art samples she receives and how to compete in today's competitive market.

Bill Mayer, award-winning and long established master Illustrator will speak alongside SCAD illustration professor and master illustrator, Rick Lovell. Both of these illustrators rose in their careers during what is called the "Golden Age of Illustration." You may have seen their works on the covers of Time Magazine or popular books, including the Wee Free Men series by Terry Pratchett. The experience these men have to share will be immense and enlightening.

Again this year, Master Illustrator Mark Braught will mentor 25 illustrators (first come, first serve) with an assigned project before the workshop. Mark’s popular artwork includes merchandising for the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. The goal is, with Mark's one-on-one consultation throughout the process, to create a finished piece ready to show at the workshop. This was a huge hit last year as many of our illustrators found his guidance extremely valuable. NOTE: Homework will be assigned up until Friday, August 28th only.

This will be followed by a group question & answer session to cover anything we may have missed. As if this weren't enough, participants will display their work and receive feedback from this illustrious faculty in a public overview manner. The experience of seeing how other illustrators present their work, what is successful and what isn't, and how an Art Director can quickly determine what might work for them is an experience I wish had been around when I was starting out. Plan to learn tons and we look forward to seeing you!
