Friday, February 22, 2013 REGISTRATION WILL OPEN ON December 1, 2012 | ||
Friday, February 22nd from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Marriott Century Center, Atlanta, Georgia Illustrators' Day is for beginning to professional children's book illustrators who are interested in putting together or improving their portfolio, learning how best to promote themselves to publishers, hearing from established illustrators, displaying their portfolio to potential clients, and participating in assignments which will get your creative juices flowing! Registration is now open. (You do not have to be a member of SCBWI to participate, although it's cheaper if your are.) We're thrilled to have an incredible line-up of speakers and mentors this year... Chad Beckerman, Creative Director for Abrams (Imprints Abrams Appleseed, Abrams Books for Young Readers, and Amulet Books) Bio: If cover designers are superhero alter-egos, then Chad W. Beckerman (Creative director and cover designer for Abrams Appleseed, Abrams Books for Young Readers and Amulet Books, as well as Mishaps and Adventures blogger) would have to be Clark Kent. Friendly and hard working by day, yet designing covers that have been known to burst onto shelves, leaping tall buildings (or at least generating lots of interest) in a single bound. He has designed such series as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Origami Yoda, NERDS and The Sisters Grimm. In addition to a vast amount of picture books, such as I Had a Favorite Dress, Iggy Peck, Architect and Huff and Puff. He has worked with many fantastic illustrators, Nikki McClure, Brett Helquist, Dan Santat, Sophie Blackall, Yuko Shimizu, Jen Corace, Marcellus Hall and Amy June Bates. Dianne Hess, Executive Editor at Scholastic and Blue Sky Press Topic: Marketing Materials Attendees will bring postcards and brochures to the conference for Diane to comment on and critique, with a few visits to referenced websites to point out what she looks for when she goes from a postcard to a web based portfolio. Bio: Dianne Hess is Executive Editor of Scholastic Press where she acquires and edits an eclectic mix of picture books, illustrated chapter books for ages 7-9, middle-grade novels, and middle-grade non-fiction. Some her books include two Caldecott Honor Books – Henry’s Freedom Box by Ellen Levine, illustrated by Kadir Nelson and Zen Shorts by Jon J Muth. Illustrator and Innovator Will Terry will be our working illustrator this year. Topic: Embracing Technology and Change In the past decade the internet has become the single most dramatic change in our lives and careers. Some ignore it. Some fear it and some are taking advantage of it. As the publishing landscape experiences drastic changes many of us will have to also have to make big changes in order to thrive. Let's talk about the opportunities. Bio: Will Terry has been illustrating for 20 years. His work has appeared in publications such as: Time, Money, Wall Street Journal and ads for Sprint, Pizza Hut, M&M Mars, Fed Ex, and Master Card. He has illustrated over 25 children’s books for Random House, Simon Schuster, Scholastic, Dial, and Albert Whitman - 3 ebooks, 1 app, & co-founded a video tutorial company called Folio Academy.com, is an avid blogger, and currently teaches illustration at UVU. Mentorship: Illustrator Mark Braught will mentor the first 12 registrees (first come, first serve) with an assigned project before the workshop. Mark illustrated many classic children's books such as COSMO'S MOON and P IS FOR PEACH. With Mark's one-on-one consultation throughout the process, your goal will be to create a finished piece ready to show on Illustrators' Day during the Portfolio Reviews. Portfolio Reviews: The first 30 registrees will display their work and receive feedback from this illustrious faculty in a public overview manner (timed - no more than 2 minutes). The experience of seeing how other illustrators present their work, what is successful and what isn't, and how an Art Director can quickly determine what might work for them is an experience I wish had been around when I was starting out. Plan to learn tons and we look forward to seeing you! Please follow the Portfolio Guidelines when gathering your work. (No digital portfolios.) NEW! Dummy Display: This year we will have one designated table in the portfolio viewing area dedicated to display picture book dummies. NEW!
